When the Prince enters to stop the fray between Tybalt and Benvolio, violence is required in order to maintain the peace and this demonstrates a form of irony. Here the pathetic fallacy foreshadows later events. Physical conflict then follows as Mercutio views Romeo as a coward. The conflict between parent and child is visible throughout the play. In the Capulet household the focus is on discord primarily between Juliet and her parents. As a father, Lord Capulet has a right to choose a husband for Juliet. He chooses a gentleman of noble status yet Juliet is still ungrateful.

In the Elizabethan era, women from an aristocratic family were expected to obey their father yet Juliet is opposing this.

There are occasions between Romeo and Juliet where there is conflict between the sacred and profane. The conflict between families is introduced in the beginning of the play. The play begins with Samspon and Gregory looking for a fight: which then escalates into a brawl with Benvolio and Tybalt and finally includes Lord Capulet and Lord Montague. Here the structure is important as it shows the escalation of hierarchy fighting.

Both central characters commit suicide by drinking poison. The play emphasizes love rather than sex, but there are a few examples of Shakespeare's trademark "bawdy humor" at work. The play is a constant trail of feud, danger, secrecy and romance. One of the most well known scenes in the play is the balcony scene, and I am going to comment on both of the productions of that scene. In the Zeffirelli production of the balcony scene, the settings are very medieval and old. At the very start of the scene, Romeo is out on the street with Benvolio and Mercutio.

The street is cobbled, worn down and dirty.

The buildings are also made out of very rough, old stone and are medieval looking. When Romeo enters the orchard, we see more old, stone walls and lots of large trees, which are ideal for hiding from any guards around the house, again showing the secrecy effect.

We can also see a romantic side to the setting. They are very much in love and are always thinking romantic thoughts about each other. In the Luhrman production of the balcony scene, the settings are very modern and take a different approach to how the scene is acted out. Around the orchard are lots of fairy lights and flowers which, again, add to the romance factor of this scene.
